Local governments should…
Not gerrymander and passing voting suppression bills. Instead, pass local bills that help expand the right to vote, including ranked choice voting, shutting down corporate influence, and making it easier to vote by mail.
I mean. This one boggles the mind. The right to vote is fundamental, and it’s supported by at least 56% of the population.* But corrupt legislators and a wild SCOTUS mean gerrymandering is real, active, and legal. And all of our representatives — and all of us — could be doing more to ensure everyone has the ability to vote. And maybe even move to ranked choice voting, getting rid of Citizens United and overwhelming corporate influence, and changing our electoral college system so that it’s a better system. But we know, we know. One step at a time.
Not gerrymander and passing voting suppression bills. Instead, pass local bills that help expand the right to vote, including ranked choice voting, shutting down corporate influence, and making it easier to vote by mail.
Elections never end. Help register and turnout voters (and, yes, the activists behind this site don’t believe we can’t vote ourselves out of any problem. We need politicians who will push and pass legislation to help working people. So GOTV — and then keep organizing.)
Congress should pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen this essential law and restore its core protections. It should also pass more legislation to protect the right to vote, going as far as they can to ensure voting is a fundamental right that anyone can access.
Pressure Congress to pass voting rights. Pass an executive order to protect the right. Genuinely do anything other than telling us to “vote harder.”
