Help cancel the debt and fight for the world we want. Organize with other people who have student loan debt and help win more debt cancellation and free college for all.
48 million people owe $1.8 trillion dollars of student loan debt. Decades of increasing cost of tuition, coupled with slashes in federal and state education budgets, means that millions of families can’t afford college without taking on debt. Payments on federal student debt has now been stopped for over two years, and millions can’t afford payments to be turned back on. Biden cancelled $10-20K per borrower (which most people support), but it’s means tested and will require an application* (and it might be stopped in the courts). And there’s still radio silence on private student loan debt and the (still) ever growing cost of tuition. Investing in education is investing in our country’s future. Higher education should be free.

The President can cancel federal debt, but 2% of student loan debt is private and can’t be cancelled by the President. Congress should pass legislation to cancel private debt. And canceling debt is also only part of the problem: Congress also needs to make college free. Ask your local Rep to take on the cost of higher education.
The Higher Education Act of 1965 grants the President the authority to cancel student debt with the stroke of a pen. All he has to do is sign an executive order to do so. And he doesn’t need to means test or ensure an application for any of it. Demand he sign the order to cancel student loan debt — all of it — and before the courts keep delaying any sort of cancellation at all.
