and build the pathways where everyone can engage in the right ways: don’t perpetuate the inequalities we live in already. The capacity people have to engage online is at times to the capacity they have to engage offline, unless they decide it’s worth the time they spend on social media or texting friends (if they have the luxury of such time). So, providing opportunities to engage and be part of digital is key. Use the right channels, understand where your base is and meet them where they’re at (stop telling people to download apps; go to the app they are using!); develop the content that matters to them; and respond to online and offline tensions, especially around race, gender, and class. All the problems we see in real life exist on the internet, and, in fact, can be worse. Be intentional in how you frontload the nuance of engagement around these core issues.
