Issue: Issue identification might be the greatest skill to cultivate.
can you forecast the things your community might care about? Can you identify the things simmering under the surface that might connect lots of people; that might be winnable or moveable or might shift hearts and minds? That’s where we need to start. Being able to identify issues that matter to people; that could be won (now or in the future); and that have a story you can tell about it – a villain (a corporation or politician); a hero (ideally your group or the person), and all of the narrative arc in between is how you can be ready to respond to it. This can be done informally – just based on your intuition as a person – or formally – tracking messages, ads, and purposely testing different issues for engagement.
