Companies like Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Uber, Apple, and others scale their influence every day: aggregating our data, owning media and social media platforms (and what’s said and seen on them), pushing back against legislation to limit their power and growth, and apps are changing the nature of work and our lives. 56% of people believe tech companies need more regulation. In the absence of federal standards around big tech, local governments can pass legislation that provides safety and transparency at least on the local level: for instance, bills like California’s data protection act, and moves by various governments to ensure rights for gig workers. Demand your local government do the same by joining our campaign.
Pass legislation to regulate big tech: including scrutiny around privacy, data collection and use of data, regulation of social media, anti-trust, and corporate consolidation. Pass the PRO Act and other legislation that would ensure rights for gig and other insecure workers. And they should stop taking their money. That’s a good way to make sure their influence stops.
There’s a lot Biden should do: push for legislation around privacy, data collection, regulation of social media, anti-trust, and corporate consolidation. Continue and expand the investigation into gig and app workers to ensure they get fair rights. Put more money in to the Federal Trade Commission and the National Labor Relations Board so they can do their jobs to regulate big tech and ensure tech workers can form unions at work. And push for electoral changes so that the amount of money corporations donate doesn’t control everything.
